A review of material on harmony and counterpoint. The class will focus on the
composition of choral and solo works with special reference to performance in
final cantorial and secular recitals. A reformulation and summary of previous
historical material in Western music, from the Middle Ages to the present.

Piano Workshop I
MUS 4300, 1 credit
An opportunity to learn to use the piano as a tool for general musicianship. The
class will focus on study harmonization and reduction of multipart scores for the
piano. Students are assigned to this course on an individual basis and may be
either exempted by examination or assigned more than one year of training.
Permission of instructor required. Class limited to twenty-four students.

The Jewish Component of the History of Art Music in the West

A survey of the history of Jewish involvement in the development of Western
music.

Music Resources and Methods
MUS 4432, 3 credits
A hands-on course designed to provide valuable materials for teaching music in
religious school settings for Shabbat, festivals, Yom ha-atzma'ut, Hanukkah,
Purim, Tu Bishvat, and other special occasions. Time is also devoted to materials
and teaching techniques for children's choirs in synagogue religious schools.

Survey of Art Song I
MUS 5550, 3 credits
An in-depth study of representative art song literature from the seventeenth
century to the present. Students perform songs in various languages, with
emphasis upon stylistic interpretation and diction.
