Hiddur Mitzvah- הידור מצוה

The concept of Hiddur Mitzvah—embellishing a mitzvah through aesthetics—is attributed to a midrash (Mekhilta de Rabbi Ishmael) on a verse in the Song of the Sea: "This is my God and I will glorify Him" (Exodus 15:2). With enhancement and adornment, the mitzvot appeal to the senses and the heart, and sacred objects and activities become even more precious.

Hiddur Mitzvah, this year's Torah Fund theme, resonates with many Jewish women, particularly those who have been involved in artistic activities. Whether they used their embroidery skills to decorate the woven curtains for the Ark or Torah mantles in 17th-century Italy and Prague or are crafters in 21st-century women's groups, women continue to be committed to this most ancient of Jewish values.

The pomegranate imagery of this year's Torah Fund Pin has multilayered meaning. In addition to being beautiful, pomegranates (rimmonim) are one of the bountiful fruits of the Land of Israel. Rimmonim is also the term used for the silver adornments (finials) on the atzei chaim (Torah rollers) of the Sefer Torah (Torah scroll); just a little something extra that has adorned our Land, our Torah, our rituals, and mitzvot for centuries, and added meaning to our daily lives. May this year of Torah Fund activities and events be a blessing to one and all.

Keter Kavod Pin Crown of Honor

This fourteen-karat-gold pin replicates an eighteenth-century manuscript from the Rare Book Room of The Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary. It is a gift to those who commit to an annual $5,000 unencumbered contribution to Torah Fund.

Cards

The beautifully designed Torah Fund tzedakah box is perfect for inclusion in your campaign planning.

Susan Leviton, artist and fellow Women's League member, envisioned a tzedakah box that would be a work of art, enhancing the beauty of Shabbat and tefillot.

The design and the inspiration of the wording motivates women to keep display the box and serves as a reminder of their new or renewed commitment to Torah Fund and the perpetuation of Conservative/Masorti Judaism. See our Tzedakah Box strategies tip sheet to help maximize visibility and donations.

Torah Fund on eBay

It can be a mitzvah to sell things on eBay—make a portion of your sale a direct donation to Torah Fund.

How to use eBay to donate to Torah Fund

Choose what percentage of the final sale price you want Torah Fund to receive. Donate from 10 to 100 percent of the final sale. Our partners at eBay Giving Works and Mission Fish will do all the calculations and you'll get a receipt for tax purposes.

Why it works

According to eBay Giving Works, "buyers typically pay more for items that benefit a nonprofit." When you designate at least 10 percent of your sale price to Torah Fund, your items will get special treatment that isn't available to for-profit-only sellers. This includes a distinctive ribbon icon, as well as being listed in special search functionality for buyers who want to support good causes.

Directions:

  1. Register as a seller with eBay Giving Works Through MissionFish.
  2. Designate Torah Fund and decide how much, from 10 to 100 percent, you want to share from each sale.
  3. Once the item is listed, bidding begins on eBay. (Nonprofits reserve the right to cancel items listed on their behalf.)
  4. If the item sells, the seller gets paid by the buyer and ships the item-same as always. The buyer pays for the shipping.
  5. MissionFish collects the donation from the seller, pays the nonprofit, and provides a tax receipt.
