H. L. Miller Cantorial School and College of Jewish Music

Lindsey came to the H. L. Miller Cantorial School and College of Jewish Music with an acting and singing background. Like many cantorial students who start out in entertainment, she enjoyed performing but felt there was something missing.

The Erie, Pennsylvania, native and graduate of the University of Pittsburgh says, “The cantorate for me is a combination of so many things I love: the Jewish community, performing, singing, and working with children.”

Of her program she says, “JTS is such a warm and welcoming environment. There are a lot of expectations; people really push you to be the best you can possibly be, but then they give you the support you need in case you are struggling or need help. My classmates are very helpful. When I went over to my fifth-year classmate’s apartment late at night saying, ‘I don’t know how to sing this, please help,' we worked together until I was able to sing it correctly. ”

Lindsey enjoys living in New York. “New York is like the Walt Disney World of Judaism. There’s so much going on; every Friday night there is something different.” In her spare time, she likes to hear live music that matches her own eclectic musical tastes in the huge variety of clubs and concert halls in New York City. As far as the future goes, she admits, “I am open to many paths. I am getting such a broad understanding of what it takes to be a cantor and all the possibilities that are available to me.”
